DHI Hair Transplant

DHI, also known as Direct Hair Implant or Direct Hair Implantation, is a revolutionary form of hair transplant technique which is widely recognised as one of the most effective means of combatting thinning hair.

A further developed form of FUE transplant treatment, during which the clinician can directly implant hairs into the scalp using a pen-shaped tool for maximum results and minimum pain, DHI relies on hair follicles which are extracted from the back and base of the scalp before being transplanted into the areas where hair is thinning.

But what makes DHI so much more effective than the other treatment techniques available through hair loss clinics, and how exactly does the process work? Keep reading to find the answers to all your questions and to discover if DHI could really be the best solution for you.

treatment explained

How does DHI work?

The Direct Hair Implantation process works on a similar level to FUE hair loss treatment, in that it works with individual hair follicles which are sourced and removed from another part of the scalp in order to fill the gaps left by thinning hair.

The clinician will shave the area of your head which is going to receive the transplant and will apply a local anaesthesia to numb the site.

A donor site will be identified, usually around the back and base of the scalp, and around the ears. Hair follicles will be extracted one by one from the donor site (this step is the same as that which occurs during FUE treatment and is why DHI is considered a modified version of FUE).

The individual hair follicles from the donor site will be loaded into a pen-shaped tool which then creates the transplant site and implants the hair follicle in one movement.

The clinician will apply an antibiotic cream to the site and will advise you of any aftercare requirements and advice to keep both the donor and transplant site clean and free from bacteria.

On average the treatment will last a few hours though the exact time will depend on the severity of your hair loss and how many hair follicles need to be transplanted in a single session.

DHI vs. alternative hair loss treatments & techniques

Despite being very similar in terms of the process to both FUE and FUT, with all three treatments taking hair follicles from one part of the head and transplanting them into the thinning area, the main difference is that DHI works with individual hair follicles and is able to make the scalp incisions and implant the hair follicles at the same time.

Conversely, during FUT treatment, the clinician will work with strips of hair rather than individual follicles. Because of this, DHI is both a more streamlined treatment and a less painful one, with this form of hair implantation giving clients the peace of mind knowing that the treatment will be painless, and the results will be immediate.
